EU's Gas Import Mix: Imports of Piped Russian Gas Increased by About 10% in May As US LNG imports Declined
June 8, 2025
Europe’s energy landscape is transforming as the continent reduces its reliance on imported natural gas. Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the EU accelerated efforts to diversify gas supplies, launching the REPowerEU plan to phase out fossil fuels and other plans to reduce imports form Russia. Russian gas imports dropped from 45% to 19% of total consumption by 2024, with increased LNG imports from the US. However, challenges persist, including rising Russian LNG imports, energy security concerns, variability of supplies form wind energy, and price volatility. We believe that Europe cannot eliminate dependence on Russian gas even after 2027. The geopolitics of gas imports will change again once the war in Ukraine ends. US LNG imports will peak, and conflicts between US policy to boost LNG exports to Europe and European policies to increase dependence on solar and wind will arise. The Carbon border tax is expected to lead to energy shortages in Europe if implemented in its current form without exemptions. In the report below, we discuss some of the EU gas market development in May with an outlook for the summer months. In latest report, we discussed the role of Turkey as a gas hub for Europe: Turkey As a Major Energy Hub: Will Turkey’s Gas Discoveries Be a Game Changer?
